Understanding Synthetic Grass Systems

A-TURF FIBER TYPES
Traditional Slit Film Polyethylene
Parallel-Long Slit Film Polyethylene
Monofilament Polyethylene
Nylon
The A-Turf line includes all of these fiber types.

PRIMARY BACKING
A-Turf’s primary backings (shown to right) are produced with the ideal absorption rate to lock fibers in place, and offer industry-leading dimensional stability. Every backing on the market is available to A-Turf.

SECONDARY BACKING
A-Turf’s liquid-applied secondary backing locks the fibers into the primary backing.

SEAMING METHODS
A-Turf installation crews are proficient at both primary methods of piecing together the turf rolls into a monolithic field. We use a wide seam tape with a long proven adhesive when adhering seams and durable thread with state-of-the-art sewing equipment when sewing seams.

INFILL
A-Turf is very particular about the volume, cleanliness, size and shape of the rubber and sand that it uses. A-Turf rubber & sand systems feature the best rubber on the market. Clean. Right-sized. Ambiently ground. Round or non-angular sand is used, making it non-abrasive to both the athletes and fibers. Its shape also prevents compaction and hardening of the surfacing system. A-Turf features ambient and cryogenically processed rubber in its rubber-only systems.

FIELD MARKINGS
Some of the field markings are tufted into the rolls of synthetic grass during the manufacturing process, specifically straight lines that run with the length of the roll. Other field markings, including logos, numbers, hash marks and some game lines, are normally inlaid by the installation team. Painted markings are an option.

OPTIONAL RESILIENT SHOCKPAD
G-Max is the measurement of a surface’s shock absorption. Well-conditioned natural grass is approximately 95. The lower the number, the more the athlete’s impact is being absorbed by the surface rather than the body. When a firm, yet resilient, ECORE™ ShockPad is combined with an A-Turf infilled system, the G-Max is approximately 95 upon installation, compared to a minimum of 120 on fields without an underpad. Throughout the life of the surface, the G-Max of a system with an underpad is substantially lower than fields without an underpad.
  • ECORE™pre-fabricated ShockPad provides superior consistency of density, thickness and resilience.
  • Excellent long-term permeability.
  • Most consistent surface to install synthetic grass on ... minimizes any displacement of finished stone base during installation process.
  • 20-25 year expected life (more than two field life cycles) ... underpad can be re-used when new synthetic grass system is installed.
  • Typical thicknesses are 8 mm and 10 mm – range is 6 mm to 13 mm.
  • When specified, A-Turf offers poured on-site elastic layers as an alternative.

DRAINAGE
Water percolates through the infill material and exits the turf system through the perforations in the turf backing. From that point the water follows one of the views shown below.

BASE OPTIONS
The overwhelming majority of synthetic grass fields are installed on some variation of a crushed stone base. A sound base is critical to the long-term performance and aesthetics of the field. A-Turf has the capability to construct crushed stone bases. In some cases, others construct the crushed stone base and leave fine grading to A-Turf. In other cases, A-Turf installs the synthetic grass over the crushed stone base built by others. Regardless of the company contracted to do the base construction, proper materials and equipment – and construction techniques – are critical, and necessary, to a sound base.

WARRANTY
A-Turf warrants that the Surface and the adhesives used in the installation, is and will be free from defects in material and workmanship and shall, for a period of eight (8) years from the date of acceptance by Owner, remain serviceable for multiple sports activities. A-Turf also warrants to Owner that the Surface shall drain vertically a minimum of 15 inches per hour without visible surface ponding. See Full Warranty

INSURED WARRANTY
Every synthetic grass field we sell and install is covered with an insured warranty from an A-rated insurance company. This added protection increases our value to each client. No other artificial turf manufacturer-supplier offers more comprehensive coverage than A-Turf.Learn more here.
