As a society it’s fair to say we’ve become a bit spoiled. In our “Me” state-of-mind, the one-size fits-all concept no longer works. We customize our homes, our cars and even the way information comes into our computers. So, it stands to reason that we should also have choices when building and installing a synthetic turf athletic system. After all, choices help to ensure we truly get what we want.
But before you choose – you have to know what your choices are.
In addition to the size, usage and aesthetics of the field, you also have choices about the components built into a field. When it comes to fibers, the options vary and include the popular XP Parallel-Long Slit Film and Monofilament. Infill options vary too, among them, rubber and sand or rubber only.
Now, athletic directors and baseball/softball coaches can choose to install a synthetic turf field specially designed for baseball and softball – A-Turf® Louisville Slugger®. The difference between this system and our others comes down to a modified infill system (more sand in the mix) and fiber pile height (slightly shorter). The result – a surface that delivers a high performance field that matches the unique ball roll and bounce of baseball by matching the performance of natural grass during play.
Some schools will make the choice and go with a multi-sport field, which includes baseball – because it’s what works best for them. Bottom line – you have a choice.
Synthetic grass fields also have several green benefits too. The rubber infill is made from shredded and clean scrap tire, making the system eligible for LEED® credits (pdf download). Synthetic grass never needs to be watered, fertilized or mowed – all negative impacts on the environment.
Disclaimer: You don’t have a choice about choosing an environmentally friendly field. That’s just the way we make ‘em.
