Transforming What America Plays On

An Experienced Sitework Contractor

Sitework for multi-sport field at University of Mary Washington – Fredericksburg, VA

Sitework
A-Turf is proficient at a variety of sitework types including removal of old turf systems, excavation, building perimeter and drainage systems and constructing crushed stone bases.

Crushed Stone Base
A-Turf’s role varies by project: build the turf system over base constructed by someone else; fine grade the base and build the turf system; construct the crushed stone base and build the turf system.

The overwhelming majority of synthetic turf fields are installed on some variation of a crushed stone base. A sound base is critical to the long-term performance and aesthetics of the field. There are three fundamental characteristics of a properly constructed crushed stone base:

Planarity ... The synthetic turf field will reflect the finished grade of the base. A base free of undulations (low and high spots) and other imperfections is required. It is imperative that the crushed stone base be graded to specification.

Porosity ... The proper mix of stone sizes and types is necessary to achieve percolation through the stone base to the drainage pipes.

Compaction ... Once again, the proper mix of stone sizes and types is required ... this time, to achieve the specified compaction level. Adequate compaction will prevent undesired post-installation crushed stone base settlement.

Regardless of the company contracted to do the base construction, proper materials, equipment and construction techniques are critical and necessary to a sound base.

What our clients say...

“A-Turf grass is nice and thick – like real grass. The rubber and sand infill creates a cushion that creates an unmatched safety for our athletes. The field has excellent drainage and can even stand up to the snowfalls in Buffalo.”

Dave Thomas, Director of Physical Education, Buffalo Public School System

“Having A-Turf at JSerra has been absolutely wonderful. Over time, having A-Turf will cut back a lot of costs – we will no longer have to water, cut and chalk the grass like we would have to do with natural grass. The surface is also a lot safer than natural grass.”

Pete Manarino, Athletic Director, JSerra High School

“Our A-Turf field has been one of the best investments ever made in Carmel. In a period of 29 days we hosted 54 high school events and numerous Sunday functions for the community. The field always looks and plays the same whether it is football, field hockey or soccer.”

Jim Sangirardi, Athletic Director, Carmel High School
