University of Buffalo – Nan Harvey Field

Location: Amherst, NY
Surface System Used: A-Turf® Titan DiamondBlade and Premier RS system
Completion: August 2023

Overview

Nan Harvey Field is home to the University of Buffalo (UB) women’s softball team. The university is the largest of the State University of New York (SUNY) public universities, with an enrollment of over 30,000 students.

Project Features

When UB softball moved to NCAA Division I competition in 2000, the stadium was completely renovated. But since then, the university has struggled to maintain the team’s natural grass field – especially in early spring when cold weather typically remains in the western NY region.

When the university was ready to convert the field into a top-notch artificial turf playing field, they wanted to be sure they received a proposal from A-Turf. Our capable team was recruited thanks to our reputation and other UB projects we’ve completed on campus, including Alumni Stadium which is located next to Nan Harvey Field.

For the softball field transformation, A-Turf designed a very specific turf system featuring different heights, fibers, and infill ratios. This was to ensure the infield and warning track played faster and firmer than the outfield – replicating the best features of a high-level natural softball field.

Our team installed the Titan DiamondBlade in 2” height for the green outfield area and used the Premier RS system in 1.75” height for the brown infield and warning track areas.

Made and assembled in the U.S.A., A-Turf systems feature the most durable fiber and carpet construction and the world’s strongest primary and secondary urethane backing systems – producing greater dimensional stability and the best possible playing conditions.

With the successful completion of this project in August 2023, the University of Buffalo Bulls softball team will be primed and ready for top-level home-field action for their 2024 season and beyond!
